Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia

Gaudi’s final masterpiece the Sagrada Familia has been under construction since 1882. Architect Mark Bury has taken over the task of finishing the structure (projected completion 2026). He uses contemporary digital modeling softwares and digital fabrication processes to consider the engineering and design behind this massive project.  Some of his study models are displayed in the photos below. Note: the sectional diagrams used to describe the complex geometry of the columns of the cathedral’s interior; this is a good method to consider for explaining your geometry for Digital ceramics.

The Sagrada Familia is a classic example of Catalan Modernisme, expressing itself through difference, nature, and geometric ornamentation.  Modernisme is a great precedent for Digital Ceramics and understanding its influence is essential to our travels next year.
